The Cumbre Nueva ( German : Young Summit ) is an approximately ten kilometer long mountain range in the center of the Canary Island of La Palma, which belongs to Spain , with an altitude of about 1400 m.

location

In a north-south direction, the Cumbre Nueva connects the Caldera de Taburiente with the Cumbre Vieja , which it meets at Refugio El Pilar .

Two road tunnels run through the Cumbre Nueva, through which the shortest connection between the island's capital Santa Cruz de La Palma on the east side and the Aridane Valley (municipalities Los Llanos de Aridane , El Paso and Tazacorte ) is made on the west side. A hiking trail leads over the Cumbre Nueva at the El Reventón pass on the old Camino Real , which connects the west and east sides of the island. A road (now paved as LP-203) overcomes the Cumbre at Refugio El Pilar at an altitude of 1450 meters. On the Cumbre Nueva itself there is a forest road, the continuation of which over the Cumbre Vieja forms a hiking trail, the Ruta de los Volcanes ("Volcano Route").

climate

Together with the Caldera de Taburiente and the Cumbre Vieja, the Cumbre Nueva divides the island into two climatically different halves. A typical phenomenon for the Cumbre Nueva is called Cascada de nubes ("cloud waterfall"). At a height of around 1450 meters, trade wind clouds from the east roll over the ridge and dissolve on the west side.

geology

The Cumbre Nueva is of volcanic origin. The volcanoes are considered extinct. The east side, created as a result of a collapse, is less steep than the west side, which is furrowed by many small barrancos (gorges). Contrary to what the name suggests, the Cumbre Nueva is geologically older than the Cumbre Vieja.
