Veľký Horeš (until 1948 Slovak "veľký gyres", Hungarian Nagygéres ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with a population of 1,045 (December 31, 2019), which for Okres Trebišov of, a circle kraj Košický heard. It is part of the traditional Zemplín landscape .

geography

The municipality is located in the southern part of the Eastern Slovak Lowlands in the Medzibodrožie (Hungarian Bodrogköz ) region, right on the Hungarian border. Alluvial meadows and marshy soils make up a large part of the municipal area. The center of the village lies at an altitude of 106  m nm and is eight kilometers from Kráľovský Chlmec and 51 kilometers from Trebišov (both road distances).

Neighboring communities are Svätuše in the north, Malý Horeš in the east, Kisrozvágy and Nagyrozvágy (both in Hungary) in the south, Strážne in the west and again Malý Horeš (cadastral municipality Nový Horeš) in the north-west.

history

Roman Catholic Church

The place was indirectly mentioned in writing for the first time in 1214 as Gures , at that time still together with the neighboring town of Malý Horeš. In 1438 a place called Naghgerez is mentioned in a document, which was owned by Magister Peter and Jakob and later by different families. In 1557 7½ porta are recorded. In the 18th century the Szennyey family owned the local estates , in the 20th century it was the diocese of Kosice . In 1828 there were 109 houses and 799 inhabitants who were employed as farmers and winemakers.

Until 1918/1919, the place in Semplin County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. On the basis of the First Vienna Arbitration Award , he was in Hungary again from 1938 to 1944.

According to the 2011 census, Veľký Horeš had 1,048 inhabitants, including 789 Magyars , 202 Slovaks , six Roma , two Ukrainians and one Russian . 48 residents gave no information on ethnicity .

514 residents supported the Reformed Church, 236 residents the Roman Catholic Church, 143 residents the Greek Catholic Church, 12 residents the Jehovah's Witnesses and one resident of the Orthodox Church. 51 residents had no denomination and the denomination of 78 residents was not determined.
