Veľká Tŕňa (until 1948 Slovak "Veľká Torona"; Hungarian Nagytoronya ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with 445 inhabitants (December 31, 2019), which for Okres Trebišov of, a circle kraj Košický heard. It is part of the traditional Zemplín landscape .

geography

The municipality is located in the southwestern part of the East Slovakian lowlands on the slope of the small mountain range Zemplínske vrchy , near the border with Hungary . A small stream flows through the village in the Roňava catchment area . The highest point of the municipality is the forested Rozhľadňa mountain ( 469  m nm ) east of the town center. In addition, the Slovak part of the Tokaj wine-growing region extends (according to the Slovakian view) into the municipality. The center of the village is located at an altitude of 170  m nm and is 11 kilometers from Sátoraljaújhely and 25 kilometers from Trebišov .

Neighboring municipalities are Veľaty and Hrčeľ in the north, Kysta in the northeast, Kašov and Cejkov in the east, Malá Tŕňa in the south, Čerhov in the west and Luhyňa in the northwest.

history

Greek Catholic Church

Veľká Tŕňa was first mentioned in writing in 1220 as Tolna . In 1321 the village was owned by the Mics dynasty , from 1330 to 1512 part of it belonged to the Poor Clares of Sárospatak . Other landowners came from the families of Semsey (1479), Czékey (1481), Buttkay (1511), Aspremont (17th and 18th centuries) and Széchy (19th century). In 1828 there were 48 houses and 372 residents who were employed as farmers and winemakers.

Until 1918/1919, the place in Semplin County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. On the basis of the First Vienna Arbitration Award , he was again part of Hungary from 1938 to 1944.

From 1964 to 1990 Veľká Tŕňa was together with Malá Tŕňa part of the unified municipality Tŕňa.

population

According to the 2011 census, Veľká Tŕňa had 447 inhabitants, including 432 Slovaks , five Magyars , three Czechs and one Russian . Six residents did not provide any information about their ethnicity .

182 residents supported the Greek Catholic Church, 132 residents the Roman Catholic Church, 79 residents the Reformed Church, six residents the Jehovah's Witnesses, five residents the Orthodox Church and one resident each to the Baha'i, the Baptists and the Evangelical Church AB Nine residents were non-denominational and the denomination of 31 residents was not determined.
