Biel (until 1948 Slovak "Biel", Hungarian Bély ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with a population of 1,369 (December 31, 2019), which for Okres Trebišov of, a circle kraj Košický heard. It is part of the traditional Zemplín landscape .

geography

The municipality is located in the south of the Eastern Slovak Lowlands , more precisely in the Medzibodrožie (Hungarian Bodrogköz ) called landscape between the Bodrog and the Tisza . The Hungarian and Ukrainian borders are three and six kilometers from Biel, respectively. The center of the village lies at an altitude of 101  m nm and is three kilometers from Čierna nad Tisou , ten kilometers from Kráľovský Chlmec and 62 kilometers from Trebišov .

Neighboring municipalities are Bačka and Boťany in the north, Čierna nad Tisou in the east, Veľké Trakany in the southeast, Dámóc (H) in the south and Dobrá in the west.

history

The place was first mentioned in writing in 1214 as Beyle and at that time it was the estate of the Tőke family . Other landlords included Perényi in the 15th, Horváth in the 16th and Sennyey from the 17th to the 20th century. In 1557 there was a Meierhof and five portals here . In 1787 there were 58 houses and 401 inhabitants and in 1828 79 houses and 587 inhabitants were employed in agriculture, fruit growing, livestock farming and as manufacturers of reed products .

Until 1918/1919, the place in Semplin County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. Due to the First Vienna Arbitration Award , he was again in Hungary from 1938 to 1944.

According to the 2011 census, Biel had 1,474 inhabitants, including 1,036 Magyars, 366 Slovaks, eleven Roma, two Germans and two Russians and one Russian and one Czech. 65 residents gave no information in this regard. 722 residents committed to the Roman Catholic Church, 342 residents to the Greek Catholic Church, 225 residents to the Reformed Church, 23 residents to the Jehovah's Witnesses, eleven residents to the Orthodox Church, three residents to the Evangelical Church AB and one resident to the Bahaitum; one resident professed a different denomination. 54 inhabitants had no denomination and 92 inhabitants had no denomination.
