Mighty baby

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mighty Baby was a psychedelic rock band that emerged from the mod band The Action in 1968 and lasted until 1971.

Band history

After a few line-up changes, The Action had developed musically. Originally started as an R&B and soul group, in 1967 they turned towards psychedelic rock with folk and blues influences. The group at that time included Alan "Bam" King (vocals, guitar), Martin Stone (guitar), Ian Whiteman (piano), Mike "Ace" Evans (bass) and Roger Powell (drums). When they switched to Head Records, they called themselves "Mighty Baby".

Although they enjoyed success as a live band, their album Mighty Baby (1969) only sold sluggishly. In 1970 Mighty Baby performed at the Isle of Wight Festival . In the same year Head Records broke up and the group moved to Blue Horizon , where their album A Jug of Love (1971) was released.

In 1971 Mighty Baby made an appearance at the Glastonbury Festival . A little later the group broke up. Occasionally, group members also appeared together afterwards. Later, several previously unpublished recordings by the band came on the market.
