Michalovce (until 1927 in Slovak "Michaľovce"; German Großmichel , Hungarian Nagymihály ) is a city in eastern Slovakia , near the border with Ukraine .

Downtown view

It has around 40,000 inhabitants and is the capital of Okres Michalovce .

history

The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1244. Until 1918 the city belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia .

location

The city is located on the Laborec River in the north of the Eastern Slovakian Plain, about 50 kilometers east of Košice , the center of Eastern Slovakia . From an administrative point of view, Michalovce belongs to the Košický kraj . The region is one of the warmest in Slovakia and has up to 2200 hours of sunshine per year with an average annual temperature of 9-10 ° C. The Zemplínska šírava reservoir has been located east of the city since 1966 .

Worth seeing

The city center has only a few old buildings, but - like many cities in eastern Slovakia - a large central square designed as a leisure and shopping center . In the west of Michalovce, on the main road to Košice, there are several industrial companies .

The castle with the surrounding park on the banks of the Laborec is a very beautiful building . It was built as a rectangular Renaissance building with open arcades in the 17th century on the site of an older structure (probably a frequently mentioned castle). The castle was later redesigned several times. Today it is a museum.

Next to the castle stands a Catholic baroque - Sanctuary from the 14th-15th Century. There are also two Greek Catholic churches from 1772 ( Rococo ) and 1931–34 ( Neo-Byzantine style ).

On the hill Hrádok stands the mausoleum of the Sztáray family , which was built as a free replica of Michael's Church in Košice in the neo-Gothic style in 1893–1898.

Surroundings

In the vicinity of Michalovce, the eastern Slovak lowlands spread out, which are only a few meters above the eastern Pannonian plain, into which it merges 50 km to the south. The Laborec and the other rivers ( Latorica , Topľa and Ondava ) drain south into the Bodrog and the nearby Tisza and are partly accompanied by alluvial forest .

The region includes the Trebišov , Michalovce and Sobrance districts , and in the north the Slanské vrchy and Vihorlat mountains (1076 m).

The university town of Uzhhorod lies just across the border with Ukraine , which is about 40 km away (see also History of Carpathian Ukraine ).

Geology and nature

Tertiary and Quaternary deposits form the geological subsurface in the northern part of the lowlands on the central reaches of the Laborec . From the fertile plain (height about 110-115 m) protrude two low, forested hills, the Hrádok (163 m) and the larger Biela hora (159 m). Their geology is shaped by chippings and sandstone .

The city is located on the plain near the Zemplínska šírava (11 × 3 kilometers), a large reservoir and a center of local tourism. It was built on the southern slope of the Biela hora until 1966 ; then it developed into a center for recreation and sports. The lake is very popular with tourists. Its eastern part is a bird sanctuary with an ornithological station. Due to the favorable location and the very warm continental climate in summer - it corresponds roughly to that of Pannonia - wine is grown in the vicinity of the reservoir.

City structure

The city is divided into 8 districts in 5 cadastral areas:
