Budkovce (Slovak until the 19th century "Butkovce"; Hungarian Butka ) is a municipality in eastern Slovakia with 1526 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). Administratively it belongs to the Okres Michalovce , which is part of the Košický kraj district .
geography
The municipality is located in the heart of the Eastern Slovak Lowlands on the Duša River. The Laborec flows further east . Budkovce is 16 kilometers away from Michalovce .
Administratively, the municipality is divided into the municipal parts Budkovce and Dolný les.
history
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1314 as Bwtka . Budkovce was the seat of the local Buttkay family , who owned the place and built a castle, which was destroyed again in the 15th century. From the 14th to the 19th century, the place developed as a town in which agriculture and handicrafts dominated. Since the 16th century the place changed its Junkers. In 1828 the community had 168 houses and 1,275 inhabitants.
The place in Semplin County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1919 and then became part of Czechoslovakia.
Sights include a country palace of the Buttkay family from 1617 and the Roman Catholic Church of the Trinity, originally from the 14th century.
