Petrovce nad Laborcom (until 1948 "Petrovce"; Hungarian Petroc ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with a population of 1,063 (December 31, 2019) that the Michalovce District of, part kraj Košický heard, and in the traditional landscape Zemplín is .

geography

The municipality is located in the northern part of the Eastern Slovak Lowlands on the right bank of Laborec , not far from the point where a canal branches off towards the Zemplínska šírava reservoir . The center of the village is located at an altitude of 119  m nm and is five kilometers from Michalovce .

Neighboring communities are Nacina Ves in the north, Zbudza in the northeast, Michalovce in the east and south, Suché in the southwest and Lesné in the west.

history

The place was first mentioned in writing in 1254 as villa Peotry , until the 17th century the forms Petroch , Petrouch and Petrowch appear regularly in the documents. The village probably got its name from the first name of the first landowner. Under previously unknown circumstances, the property came to the nobles von Großmichel at the beginning of the 14th century, who kept it until the 17th century. In 1374 there was an unfinished church and two mills, 13 farming families were active in agriculture, but nine farms were abandoned. In 1600 only eight subjects' houses were inhabited here, further waves of emigration lasted until the beginning of the 18th century.

In 1787 the village had 34 houses and 264 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 60 houses and 450 inhabitants who lived on forestry and agriculture.

Until 1918/1919 the place in Semplin County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

population

According to the 2011 census, Petrovce nad Laborcom had 996 inhabitants, including 942 Slovaks, nine Roma, seven Russians and two Czechs. 36 residents gave no information in this regard. 514 residents committed to the Roman Catholic Church, 386 residents to the Greek Catholic Church, 22 residents to the Orthodox Church, four residents to the Reformed Church, three residents to the Evangelical Church AB and two residents each to the Jehovah's Witnesses and to the Old Catholic Church; two residents professed a different denomination. Nine residents were non-denominational and 52 residents had no denomination.

The 1st order road 18 runs through Petrovce nad Laborcom between Michalovce and Strážske . The place has a stop on the Michaľany – Medzilaborce mesto – Łupków railway with a few daily local trains.
