Jovsa (Hungarian Josza ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with 827 inhabitants (December 31, 2019) that the Michalovce District of, part kraj Košický , heard, and in the traditional landscape Zemplín lies.
geography
The municipality is located in the northern part of the Eastern Slovak Lowlands below the Vihorlat Mountains on the Jovsiansky potok brook , on the northeast corner of the Zemplínska šírava reservoir . The center of the village is located at an altitude of 134 m nm and is 18 kilometers from Michalovce .
Neighboring municipalities are Valaškovce (military area) in the north, Poruba pod Vihorlatom in the east, Úbrež and Hnojné in the south and Kusín in the west.
history
Jovsa was first mentioned in writing as Joza in 1418 and was owned by the nobles of Grand Michel and part of the estate of Jasenov. In 1427 no tax was due for the place. In 1599 there were 41 subject houses in Jovsa, in 1715 there were only four households, in 1720 there were 10 households and a mill. In 1828 there were 92 houses and 481 residents who were employed as farmers, plus there were vineyards.
Until 1918/1919 the place in Ung County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. Jovsa was a health resort until the Second World War, but the facilities were set on fire at the same time and were never rebuilt.

According to the 2011 census, 835 people lived in Jovsa, including 783 Slovaks , 23 Roma , three Ukrainians , two Czechs and one Croat . 69 residents did not provide any information on ethnicity .
451 residents committed to the Greek Catholic Church, 121 residents to the Roman Catholic Church, eight residents to the Orthodox Church, seven residents to the Evangelical Church A.B, six residents to the Pentecostal Movement, four residents to the Reformed Church and three residents to the Jehovah's Witnesses ; six residents professed a different denomination. 45 inhabitants had no denomination and the denomination of 184 inhabitants was not determined.
