Veľké Slemence (until 1927 in Slovak "Veľké Selmence"; in Hungarian Nagyszelmenc ) is a municipality in eastern Slovakia . It is located in the eastern Slovak lowlands on the border with Ukraine , about 8 km from Veľké Kapušany and about 31 km from Michalovce . Around 600 people live in the village, 97% of them of Hungarian and 2.3% of Slovak descent (2001).

The place was first mentioned in writing in 1332 under the name Zelmench and belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 . It came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia as a result of the Treaty of Trianon . In the period from 1938 to 1945 the community briefly belonged to Hungary again due to the First Vienna Arbitration . In 1946 the former Hungarian territory was divided between these two states due to the Czechoslovak-Soviet treaty. According to the agreement, the new border ran through the middle of the municipality and separated the district of Kisszelmenc (Ukrainian Mali Selmenzi / Малі Селменці, approx. 200 inhabitants) from the rest of the village. Kisszelmenc has been part of Ukraine since the collapse of the Soviet Union . It was not until 2005 that a border crossing for pedestrians and cyclists was opened in the divided village due to international pressure. This border crossing now represents the external border of the EU and the Schengen area .
