Rakovec nad Ondavou (until 1927 only "Rakovec"; Hungarian Rakoc ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with a population of 1,062 (December 31, 2019) that the Michalovce District , part of the kraj Košický , heard, and in the traditional landscape Zemplín lies.
geography
The municipality is located in the northern part of the Eastern Slovak Lowlands on the western slope of the so-called hill country of Pozdišovce (Slovak Pozdišovská pahorkatina ), which covers the eastern part of the municipality. Towards the west, the altitude drops when you reach the Ondava River . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 146 m nm and is 19 kilometers by road from Michalovce .
Neighboring municipalities are Nižný Hrušov in the north, Lesné in the northeast, Suché in the east, Moravany in the south and Parchovany in the west.
history
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1266 as Rakouch . He belonged to several families, among others the village was owned by the historically important Rákóczi family between 1456 and 1750 . In the 19th and 20th centuries, the Szirmay family owned most of the local estates. In 1828 there were 123 houses and 899 inhabitants who were employed as farmers and fruit growers, and towards the end of the 19th century also as cheese makers. In 1866 the whole village burned down.
Until 1918/1919, the place in Semplin County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.
population
According to the 2011 census, 1096 inhabitants lived in Rakovec nad Ondavou, 1008 of them Slovaks , nine Magyars , four Roma , three Czechs and one Pole . One resident indicated a different ethnic group and 70 residents gave no information about the ethnic group .
549 inhabitants supported the Greek Catholic Church, 340 inhabitants joined the Roman Catholic Church, 16 inhabitants joined the Evangelical Church AB, nine inhabitants joined the Orthodox Church and eight inhabitants joined the Jehovah's Witnesses; two residents professed a different denomination. 24 residents had no denomination and 148 residents had no denomination.
