Úbrež (Hungarian Ubrezs - until 1882 Ubris ) is a municipality in the far east of Slovakia with 852 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to Okres Sobrance , part of Košický kraj .
geography
The municipality is located in the east of the Eastern Slovak Lowlands at the beginning of the transition to the Vihorlat Mountains to the north , three kilometers east of the eastern bank of Zemplínska šírava . The municipality is largely agricultural, only immediately north of the village is a forest. The town center is at an altitude of 130 m nm and is eight kilometers from Sobrance .
Neighboring municipalities are Poruba pod Vihorlatom in the north, Vyšné Remety in the northeast, Jasenov and Ruskovce in the east, Veľké Revištia in the south, Fekišovce and Hnojné in the west and Jovsa in the northwest.
history
Úbrež was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1337 as Jezenew seu Obres when the estate of Großmichel was divided . Further historical variants of the current name are (since 1369) Erbes , Vbres , Wbres , Obrys , Obres and Ubreš . A wooden church was built in 1374 on Mount Debra , the current location of the old cemetery. The village belonged to various small aristocrats before it finally came to the Sztáray family. In 1427 22 portals were recorded in a tax register. In 1734 and 1735 Úbrež was hit by floods, followed by droughts in the next few years. In 1828 there were 103 houses and 709 inhabitants who lived from forestry and agriculture.
The place in Ung County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia, or now Slovakia. 1939–1944 he was a border town to Hungary as a result of the Slovak-Hungarian War .

According to the 2011 census, Úbrež had 690 inhabitants, including 480 Slovaks, 192 Roma, three Russians, one Ukrainian and two inhabitants of another ethnic group. 12 residents gave no information in this regard. 281 residents committed to the Roman Catholic Church, 215 residents to the Greek Catholic Church, 146 residents to the Orthodox Church, eleven residents to the Reformed Church, three residents to the Seventh-day Adventists and Jehovah's Witnesses and one resident to the Old Catholic Church as well as the Evangelical Methodist Church; two residents professed a different denomination. Eight residents were non-denominational and 19 residents had no denomination.
