Tibava (until 1927 Slovak also "Cibava"; Hungarian Tiba ) is a municipality in the extreme east of Slovakia with 542 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to Okres Sobrance , part of Košický kraj .
geography
The municipality is located in the east of the Eastern Slovak Lowlands on the Choňkovský creek in the Uh catchment area . The town center is located at an altitude of 131 m nm and is two kilometers from Sobrance .
Neighboring municipalities are Horňa and Choňkovce in the north, briefly Koňuš in the northeast, Vojnatina in the east, Orechová in the south, Ostrov in the southwest and Sobrance in the west.
history
The current municipality was settled in the older Stone Age; Archaeological evidence of the Bükk culture , Bandkeramischen culture , Tiszapolgár culture , from the Hallstatt and Latène times as well as a Slavic settlement from the 6th and 7th centuries are available.
Tibava was first mentioned in writing in 1282 as Tyboa , the castle named after the place was first handed down in 1337. In the Middle Ages, Tibava was the seat of a regional manor that also included the city of Sobrance. In the 14th century Wallachians settled in the village and in 1398 the village received market rights. The local vineyards were mentioned for the first time in 1413, and in 1427 a total of 40 porta were recorded in the village . Until the 20th century the owners came from the Sztáray family .
At the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, Tibava was a medium-sized village with a church, a mill, a school and a castle. In 1828 there were 58 houses and 548 inhabitants who lived from agriculture and viticulture.
The place in Ung County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia, or now Slovakia. 1939-1944 he was once again part of Hungary as a result of the Slovak-Hungarian War .

According to the 2011 census, Tibava had 542 residents, 524 of whom were Slovaks, four Roma and four Czechs each, and one Pole. Nine residents gave no information in this regard. 365 residents professed their support for the Roman Catholic Church, 127 residents for the Greek Catholic Church, seven residents for the Orthodox Church, five residents each for the Jehovah's Witnesses and the Reformed Church and two residents for the Evangelical Church AB. Eleven residents were non-denominational and out of 20 residents the denomination was not determined.
