Sobrance (German Sobranz , Hungarian Szobránc ) is a small town in eastern Slovakia and at the same time the easternmost city in Slovakia . It has about 6200 inhabitants.

Sobrance is located on the northern edge of the Eastern Slovakian Plain , near the Ukrainian border . It is an important road junction ( Europastraße 50 ) and wine-growing region.

history

The area of the city is an old settlement site (finds from the Neolithic Age ). The first source evidence comes from 1344 (under the name Vasaros Tyba ). The settlement received its town charter in 1351. In 1560 the Sztáray family founded a provost house in honor of St. George . In the 16th century the population was in the wake of the Reformation mostly Protestant . The Counter Reformation of the 17th century brought about a return to the Roman Catholic faith. Sobranz was historically in Ung County and was part of the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 . After the breakup of Austria-Hungary , it came to the newly founded Czecho-Slovakia . In 1939 the settlement was annexed to Hungary again on the basis of the First Vienna Arbitration . In 1945, after the end of the Second World War , the place came back to Czecho-Slovakia.

In Czechoslovakia, Sobrance was the capital of the district of the same name ( Slov . Okres ) until 1960 and then again since 1996 .

The mineral springs in the northern part of the town (health resort Sobranecké kúpele ) were already known in the 14th century, and the bathhouse is now part of the district hospital.
