Remetské Hámre (until 1948 Slovak "Remetské Hámry"; Hungarian Remetevasgyár ) is a place and a municipality in the far east of Slovakia , with 560 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

geography

The municipality is located on the southern slope of the Vihorlat Mountains on the right bank of the Okna , 13 kilometers from Sobrance and 27 kilometers from Michalovce . Lake Morské oko ("sea eye") is located about 10 kilometers north of the village in the Vihorlat Mountains .

history

The original place called Hámre emerged in the late 18th century in the Potašňa district (about 5 km further upstream) as a typical workers' settlement near hammer mills on the estate of the Sztaray family . After the founding of an ironworks in the 19th century, the settlement moved to its current location. In 1828 it had 68 houses and 467 inhabitants. The iron ore was extracted from the Mochnatý vrch mountain and the clay from the Morské oko lake. The iron ore obtained was processed in three hammer mills. The town experienced its greatest boom after 1864, when the entrepreneur Ignác Gross built a rolling mill, a foundry and later a factory for the manufacture of agricultural tools. In the early 20th century, however, the whole company went downhill until it burned down completely in 1922. After the company closed, a saw was established, some of which is still in operation today.
