Morské oko (German literally Meerauge ) is the largest lake in the Vihorlat Mountains in eastern Slovakia , in the municipality of Remetské Hámre and Vyšná Rybnica . It lies at an altitude of 619  m nm , covers 13.8 hectares with a maximum depth of 25 meters. Since 1984 the lake has been protected as a National Nature Reserve Morské oko (Slovakian Národná prírodná rezervácia Morské oko , 1.08 km²) as part of the Vihorlat Protected Landscape Area .

The lake was created in the time of volcanism in the Vihorlat Mountains by a massive landslide that formed a natural reservoir , with the Okna River as the only outflow from the lake. In the 1880s a dam was built, after which the lake level rose by five meters.

Trout , minnows and loaches live in the lake .

tourism

The lake in autumn as seen from Sninský kameň

The first tourist infrastructure in the form of two shelters was established in 1880 by the Beskydy Section of the Hungarian Carpathian Union , and a year later a tourist trail was laid from the lake to Sninský kameň . Later, the Eastern Carpathian Section built a refuge on Vihorlat , which was connected to a tourist trail from Jovsa in 1885 and from there to Morské oko and Sninský kameň.

Today the lake can be reached by tourist trails from Remetské Hámre (blue marked path, approx. 2:35 h) and Zemplínske Hámre via the saddle Tri table (yellow, later blue marked path, approx. 1:45 h). There is also a narrow asphalt road to the lake, with the Krivec car park about 15 minutes' walk from the lake . You can also reach the smaller and higher situated lake Malé Morské oko from here.
