Bežovce (Hungarian Bező ) is a municipality in the far east of Slovakia with 977 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to Okres Sobrance , part of Košický kraj .

geography

The municipality is located in the east of the Eastern Slovakian lowlands not far from the Uh River , near the Ukrainian border. The parish is largely flat with a few canals and dead arms. The center of the village is at an altitude of 105  m nm and is 16 kilometers from Veľké Kapušany and 18 kilometers from Sobrance .

Neighboring municipalities are Svätuš and Tašuľa in the north, Jenkovce in the northeast, Záhor in the east, Pinkovce in the southeast, Lekárovce in the south, Vysoká nad Uhom and Senné in the west and Blatná Polianka in the northwest.

history

Bežovce was first mentioned in writing in 1214 as Blezanalaza , later mentioned names are Bezeu (1286) and Bezenow (1427). In the 14th century, members of the Dobo family were landlords, from the 17th to the 19th centuries they came from the Sztáray , Berényi , Barkóczy and Apponyi families . In 1828 there were 162 houses and 1561 inhabitants who were employed in agriculture and livestock.

The place in Ung County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia, or now Slovakia. 1939-1944 he was once again part of Hungary as a result of the Slovak-Hungarian War .

population

According to the 2011 census, Bežovce had 1,023 inhabitants, of whom 849 were Slovaks, 77 Roma, four Russians, three Ukrainians and one each German, Magyar, Moravian and Czech. 86 residents gave no information in this regard. 324 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church, 299 residents to the Reformed Church, 146 residents to the Greek Catholic Church, 85 residents to the Orthodox Church, five residents to the Evangelical Church AB and one resident each to the Apostolic Church and one to the Bahaitum; one resident was of a different denomination. 23 residents had no denomination and the denomination of 105 residents was not determined.

There are a total of four churches in Bežovce. These are in detail:

  • Reformed church in the baroque-classical style from the beginning of the 19th century
  • Greek-Catholic church in the baroque-classical style from the beginning of the 19th century
  • Roman Catholic church in neo-Romanesque style, built between 1913 and 1922
  • Orthodox Church from 1998
