Stráňany (until 1948 in Slovak "Folvark" - until 1927 "Foľvark"; German Vorwerk , Hungarian Nagymajor - until 1907 Folyvárk or Folyvark ) is a municipality in northeastern Slovakia with 190 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) belonging to Okres Stará Ľubovňa , part of the Prešovský kraj , and is counted as part of the traditional Spiš landscape .

geography

The community is located between the Spiš Magura south and the western part of the Ľubovnianska vrchovina mountain range north of the village, about halfway between Stará Ľubovňa and Červený Kláštor , near the border with Poland . At the lower end of the village, the Lipník and Veterný potok , both in the catchment area of ​​the Dunajec , flow together. The center of the village lies at an altitude of 635  m nm and is 16 kilometers from Stará Ľubovňa .

Neighboring communities are Szczawnica (PL, district Jaworki) in the north, Kamienka in the east and southeast, Vyšné Ružbachy in the south and Veľký Lipník in the west.

history

Stráňany was first mentioned in writing as Polyvark in 1343 and was originally a farm in the domain of the Niedzica Castle (today in Poland). In 1589 the Horváth-Palocsay family bought the local property from the previous owner Albert Laskó , and in the late 17th century Emmerich Thököly had the property pledged to Bishop László Mattyasozsky . In 1787 the village had 68 houses and 500 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 103 houses and 748 inhabitants who were employed as wire ties, foresters and farmers.

Until 1918 the place in Zips County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Stráňany had 201 inhabitants, of which 127 were Slovaks and 57 Russian . 17 residents did not provide any information on ethnicity .

165 residents committed to the Greek Catholic Church, 16 residents to the Roman Catholic Church and one resident each to the Evangelical Church AB and one to the Orthodox Church. One resident had no denomination and the denomination of 17 residents was not determined.
