Nižné Ružbachy (Slovak until 1927 also "Nižné Družbachy"; German Unterrauschenbach or Niederrauschenbach , Hungarian Alsózúgó - until 1907 Alsóruzsbach , Polish Drużbaki Niżne ) is a municipality in northeast Slovakia with 635 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to the Okres Stará Ľubovňa , a part of the Prešovský kraj , is part of the traditional Spiš landscape .

The community is located in the Popradtal near a small breakthrough between the Zipser Magura in the west and the Leutschauer mountains in the east, where the river makes a loop. Here the river takes on the Rieka brook on the left bank . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 555  m nm and is five kilometers from Podolínec and 12 kilometers from Stará ovubovňa .

Neighboring municipalities are Vyšné Ružbachy in the north, Lacková in the north-east, Forbasy in the east, Lomnička in the south, Reľov in the south-west, Zálesie and Podolínec in the south-west and west.

history

The place was founded according to German law by a certain Heinrich from Pudlein and was first mentioned in writing in 1287 as Rauschenbach . Because of its proximity, the village belonged to the estate of the city of Pudlein. In 1412 it was pledged to Poland along with parts of the Spiš County and remained there until 1772. From 1755 to the first half of the 19th century, a paper mill worked here. In 1828 there were 120 houses and 880 inhabitants.

Until 1918 the place in Zips County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Nižné Ružbachy had 609 inhabitants, including 572 Slovaks and one each Magyar, Czech and Ukrainian; one resident was of a different ethnicity. 33 residents gave no information in this regard. 553 residents supported the Roman Catholic Church, five residents the Greek Catholic Church and one resident of the Orthodox Church. Three residents had no denomination and the denomination of 47 residents was not determined.

traffic

The 1st order road 77 runs through Nižné Ružbachy from Spišská Belá to Stará Ľubovňa. There is also a stop on the Poprad – Plaveč railway line .
