Zálesie (until 1948 Slovak "Gibeľ"; German Giebel , Hungarian Gibely ) is a municipality in the north of Slovakia with 83 inhabitants (December 31, 2019). It belongs to the Okres Kežmarok , part of the Prešovský kraj and is counted as part of the traditional Spiš landscape .

geography

The community is located in the Spiš Magura in the source area of ​​a right bank tributary of the Rieka brook , in the catchment area of ​​the Dunajec . The town center is located at an altitude of 720  m nm and is eight kilometers from Spišská Stará Ves and 36 kilometers from Kežmarok .

Neighboring municipalities are Matiašovce in the north, Havka in the northeast, Veľká Lesná in the east, Reľov in the south and Spišské Hanušovce in the west.

history

In 1612 the place was settled by Polish residents from the area of Nowy Targ and Czorsztyn on the occasion of György Horváth-Palocsay, an owner of the domain of the Niedzica Castle . Until the abolition of serfdom in 1848 it belonged mainly to the Horváth-Palocsay family . In 1787 there were 43 houses and 323 inhabitants and in 1828 38 houses and 286 inhabitants were employed in forestry and agriculture.

Until 1918 the place in Zips County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. In 1948 the village was given the name Zálesie, which most closely corresponds to the German “Hinterwald”.

According to the 2011 census, Zálesie had 84 inhabitants, 77 of whom were Slovaks. Seven residents gave no information about the ethnic group. 77 residents confessed to the Roman Catholic Church and the denomination of seven residents was not determined.
