Vlkovce (until 1927 Slovak "Viľkovce"; German Kunzendorf or Kuntzensdorf , Hungarian Kiskuncfalva - until 1892 Vilkóc ) is a municipality in the north of Slovakia with 481 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It belongs to the Okres Kežmarok , part of the Prešovský kraj and is counted as part of the traditional Spiš landscape .

The community is located in the western part of the Leutschauer Berge in the source area of ​​the Durand stream ( Poprad river system ). The center of the village lies at an altitude of 825  m nm and is 16 kilometers from Kežmarok .

Neighboring municipalities are Tvarožná in the north, Hradisko in the east, Levoča and southeast, Dlhé Stráže and Dravce in the south, Abrahámovce in the west and Vrbov in the northwest.

history

The place Vlkovce emerged after the Mongol storm in 1241 and was first mentioned in writing in 1268 as Vilgustorph . Other historical names are Wylkosdorff (1312), Wilkisdorff and Vilkusdorf (1317), Vilkfalva (1349), Kuntzmanzdorff (1360) and Wilkowcze (1773).

In 1317 the village belonged to the alliance of the Spiš Saxons, the predominantly German-speaking citizens enjoyed privileges such as B. Exemption from all taxes. Since the second half of the 15th century it was again a simple village, which was subordinate to the Spiš Castle or, after 1514, for a long time to the city of Leutschau. In 1655 the whole village burned down. In the 18th century there was an influx of Polish residents, who slowly became Slovakized over time. In 1787 there were 15 houses and 114 inhabitants and in 1828 19 houses and 140 inhabitants.

Until 1918 the place in Zips County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Vlkovce had 469 inhabitants, including 463 Slovaks and two Poles. In the case of four inhabitants, there is no information on ethnicity. 458 residents confessed to the Roman Catholic Church, three residents to the Greek Catholic Church and one resident each to the Jehovah's Witnesses and one to the Evangelical Church AB. Two residents were non-denominational and four residents had no denomination.
