Jurské (German Sankt Girgen or Sankt Georgen , Hungarian Szepesszentgyörgy , until 1907 Szentgyörgy ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia with 1299 inhabitants (December 31, 2019). It belongs to the Okres Kežmarok , part of the Prešovský kraj and is counted as part of the traditional Spiš landscape .

Center of Jurské

The municipality is located on the western edge of the Leutschauer Berge in the small valley of the Holumnický brook . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 647  m nm and is seven kilometers from Podolínec and 20 kilometers from Kežmarok .

history

The place was founded in the 13th century by members of the Görgey family and was first mentioned in writing in 1294 as Sanctus Georgius . The name is derived from the patronage of the early Gothic church. In 1828 there were 78 houses and 581 inhabitants who were mainly employed in agriculture. At the beginning of the 20th century, linen weaving and oil presses were also common.

The place in Zips County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then came to Czechoslovakia, or now Slovakia.
