Malá Franková (up to the 19th century Slovak also "Frankovka"; German Kleinfrankenau , Kleinfrankowa or Kleinfrank , Hungarian Kisfrankvágása - until 1892 Kisfrankova ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia with 184 inhabitants (December 31, 2019). It belongs to the Okres Kežmarok , part of the Prešovský kraj and is counted as part of the traditional Spiš landscape .

The municipality is located in the Spis Magura in the valley of the Frankovský creek in the catchment area of ​​the Dunajec , near the Polish border. The center of the village is at an altitude of 750  m nm and is 13 kilometers from Spišská Stará Ves and 37 kilometers from Kežmarok .

Neighboring municipalities are Veľká Franková in the north, Jezersko , in the southeast, Vysoké Tatry (cadastral municipality Tatranská Lomnica ) and Ždiar in the south and Osturňa in the west.

history

The place arose in the 16th century in the territory of the Red Monastery and was first mentioned in writing in 1568 (other sources only give the year 1611). In 1787 there were 35 houses and 272 inhabitants and in 1828 44 houses and 336 inhabitants, who were mainly employed in agriculture.

Until 1918 the place in Zips County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

From 1979 to 1990 Malá Franková was merged with Veľká Franková to form the unitary community Franková.

population

According to the 2011 census, there were 186 inhabitants in Malá Franková, 179 of them Slovaks and one Jew; two residents were of a different ethnicity. Four residents gave no information in this regard. 179 residents supported the Roman Catholic Church and four residents supported the Greek Catholic Church. One resident had no denomination and the denomination was not determined for two residents.
