Ždiar (German Morgenröthe , Hungarian Zár - until 1902 Zsdjár , Polish Ździar ) is a five-kilometer-long municipality in eastern Slovakia , northeast of the High Tatras near the Polish border.

The Gebirgsbauern- and resort (in winter skiing destination) is in the running from west to east valley of the brook Biely (German Beler Bach ) is traversed, between the Belianske / Belianske Tatry the south and the western part of the Zipser Magura in North. A main road leads past the village, which connects the town of Spišská Belá with Nowy Targ / Zakopane in Poland. The neighboring town in the west is Tatranská Javorina and in the southeast the sub-municipality Tatranská Kotlina of the city of Vysoké Tatry .

The area of the later municipality was settled by woodcutters in the 16th century and is mentioned for the first time in 1590. The actual community was not established here until the beginning of the 17th century. This was Wallachian law applied (in Slovakia there was next to settlements that local (habitually) Legal anwandten, including settlements, German or Wallachian law used).

From 1947 to 1960 it belonged to the Vysoké Tatry community , which existed in a different form at that time , the neighboring Tatranská Javorina was incorporated from 1947 to 1993.

In the past, the residents mainly devoted themselves to pasture farming, but at the end of the 19th century, rooms were rented out to tourists and those seeking relaxation. Forestry also played an important role in the area; the wood was transported away via a cable car that ran from Podspády via Ždiar to Lendak .

In the village - especially in the districts of Antošovský vrch and Blaščatská dolina - there are various old house types that represent a folk cultural monument , for example courtyards and log houses with ornaments and strong goral influences on all four sides .

Small sights include a Roman Catholic church from 1831, a chapel from 1797 (consecrated to Saint Anne) and a chapel from 1811.

Every year in the summer, the Goralské folklórne slávnosti (Goralské folklórne slávnosti) takes place, where Polish and Slovak groups perform dances, songs and other cultural assets of the Goralské folklore.
