The municipality is located in the upper valley of the Hornád river in the traditional Spiš landscape . To the north rises a small mountain range Kozie chrbty , to the south, however, the karst mountains Slovak Paradise . Spišský Štiavnik is 13 kilometers away from Poprad .

To the east of the main town is the town of Kaštieľ, which is not an official part of the municipality.

history

The history of the place is closely related to the medieval Cistercian abbey mentioned in 1246. A place there is mentioned for the first time in 1294 as vila Sceunuk and belonged to the estate of the monastery. Since the 16th century the owners were the Lasky , Thurzo , Rueber , Thököly families , from 1674 then Jesuits, and in 1776 until the abolition of serfdom the village belonged to the diocese of Spiš . Nevertheless, the place remained a medium-sized agricultural community during these times.

Attractions

  • Gothic Roman Catholic church from the end of the 14th century, remodeled in Baroque style in the 18th century
  • Renaissance country castle from the 16th and 17th centuries in the Kaštieľ district, on the site of the former fortified monastery. Since there is a specialist college there today, a visit inside is not possible.
