Hranovnica (German Grenitz or Gränitz , Hungarian Szepesvéghely - until 1892 Grénic ) is a municipality in Okres Poprad within the Prešovský kraj in Slovakia .
geography
The place is located in the valley of the Hornád river on the Vernársky potok , which flows into the Hornád to the north. Hranovnica is located between the Kozie chrbty mountains in the north and the Low Tatras and Slovak Paradise in the south. The center of the village is at an altitude of 613 m. Poprad is 10 km to the north and Spišská Nová Ves is 27 km to the southeast.
history
Hranovnica was first mentioned as Granich in 1294 . The name is probably derived from the Slavic word granica (= border), probably because of its location on the border of the counties of Zips and Gemer . In the Middle Ages it belonged to the Cistercian order, which was located in the Spišský Štiavnik Monastery . In addition to agriculture, mining was also carried out during this period. In the years 1776-1945 the place was owned by the diocese of Spiš .
Today the main sources of income are agriculture and service sectors, which developed thanks to the proximity of the Low Tatras and Slovak Paradise national parks.
