Vernár (German Wernsdorf , Hungarian Vernár ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia . It is located between the Low Tatras and the Slovak Paradise on the northern side of the Vernár Pass, about 18 km from Poprad and 60 km from Brezno .
The place, initially known as Villa Vernari , was first mentioned in writing in 1295 when Werner, the son of Hans from Žakovce , was allowed to settle here under German law.
The place has a train station on the Margecany – Červená Skala railway about 8 km south of the place.
