Šuňava (German Schonau , Hungarian Szépfalu ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia , with a population of 1,977 (December 31, 2019) . It belongs to Okres Poprad , which is part of the higher Prešovský kraj district .
geography
The village is located in the Podtatranská kotlina (Lower Tatra Basin) at the foot of the Kozie chrbty mountain range . The watershed between the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea runs through the town. Šuňava is 18 kilometers from Poprad .
Administratively, the municipality is divided into the districts Nižná Šuňava (German Nieder-Schönau ) and Vyšná Šuňava (German Ober-Schönau ).
history
The municipality was created on January 1, 1974 by merging the previously independent places Nižná Šuňava and Vyšná Šuňava.
Vyšná Šuňava originated earlier and was first mentioned in writing in 1298 as villa Sonav ( Schonaw ).
