Jánovce (called “Janovce” in Slovak from 1927–1973; German Johann (e) sdorf , Hungarian Szepesjánosfalva - until 1892 Jánóc ) is a municipality in eastern Slovakia near Poprad in the historic Spiš region . The municipality is located on the southwestern edge of the Levočské vrchy (Leutschauer Berge).
It consists of the main town Jánovce ( Johann (e) sdorf , first evidence 1312) and Machalovce, which was incorporated in 1964 ( Machelsdorf , first evidence 1260, finds from the Neolithic ). After 1913, the municipality of Čenčice ( Zunkensdorf , first evidence from 1209) was incorporated into Machalovce .
In the Middle Ages, the community was part of the special county of the "Ten Spiš Lancers", later a direct part of the Spiš. In the 19th century there were many emigrants from the community.
In the village there is a Roman Catholic church in Baroque style from the 13th century .
