geography

Place Štrba and the High Tatras

The municipality is located in the middle of Podtatranská kotlina (German Lower Tatra Basin) under the High Tatras , almost exactly on the European main watershed , which separates the catchment areas of the Black Sea (discharge over the Waag ) and the Baltic Sea (discharge over the Poprad ) . At the same time, the ridge to the west above Štrba forms the border between the subunits Liptovská kotlina (German Liptau Basin) and Popradská kotlina (German Poprad Kessel). The Štrbský potok , a tributary of the Mlynica (catchment area Poprad), which comes from the Tatras, flows through the place Štrba , while the Biely Váh , one of the two headwaters of the Waag, flows to the west . The Kozie chrbty mountain range rises further south from Štrba and the Low Tatras even further . The highest point of the municipality is the Hrubý vrch with 2428  m nm.The town center is at an altitude of 829  m nm and is 18 kilometers from Poprad , 42 kilometers from Liptovský Mikuláš , 131 kilometers from Košice and 320 kilometers from the capital Bratislava .

In addition to the main town, Tatranská Štrba (altitude 900  m nm ) and Štrbské Pleso (altitude 1355  m nm ) also belong to the municipality . The administration of the Slovak Tatra National Park is located in Tatranská Štrba . In the Tatras, the municipality includes the mountain valley Mlynická dolina , at the end of which there are several two-thousand- meter peaks : in addition to the already mentioned Hrubý vrch, these are for example the Satan 2421  m nm , Diablovina 2390  m nm , Štrbský štít ( 2384  m nm ) and the Štrbské Solisko . ( 2301  m nm ). The 30 m high Skok waterfall of the Mlynica river is located at an altitude of around 1800  m nm , and Lake Chirmer is located near Štrbské Pleso ( Štrbské pleso in Slovak ).

Neighboring municipalities are Vysoké Tatry in the north, Mengusovce and Lučivná in the east, Šuňava and Liptovská Teplička in the south and Važec in the west.

history

The name goes back to the location of the municipality in a "gap" (Slovak štrbina ) between the High Tatras and the Low Tatras. Historically, the place is on the border between the Liptov and Spiš counties .

The village was first mentioned as Czorba in 1280 and belonged to the Bán , Szmrecsányi and Szentiványi families . In the area there were several medieval settlements such as Šoldov , on the old road between Važec and Štrba, with the ruins of a church. In 1580 there was a saw in the village. During the so-called “famine years” 1715-1717, 41 families emigrated. In 1828 there were 186 inhabitants and 1623 inhabitants who were employed as forest workers, shepherds, lime burners, charcoal burners and carters. In the 19th century tourism developed, which still defines the place today. Especially after the completion of the Kaschau-Oderberger Bahn (Ks.Od.) in 1872, tourism in and around Štrbské Pleso began to flourish .

Until 1918, the place in Liptov County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. In 1947 Štrbské Pleso became part of the newly founded town of Vysoké Tatry, but came back to the municipality of Štrba in 2007 due to a decision by the Supreme Court of the Slovak Republic.
