The Štrba station is a connecting station in the north of Slovakia in Štrba . It is particularly known to railway photographers because of the backdrop of the High Tatras and the high volume of freight traffic. It is also the highest station in Slovakia, where express trains regularly stop.

History overview

The construction of the Kaschau-Oderberger railway line was of decisive importance for the development of the High Tatras . At the beginning of the 19th century there was a densely wooded area called "Hochwald", which forms the watershed between the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea . The Sillein - Deutschendorf section was put into operation on December 7, 1871. At that time, the highest railway station in today's Slovakia, "Hochwald", was built here at an altitude of 925 meters above sea level, which has been called Tschirm ( Hungarian Csorba , Slov . Štrba ) since 1880 . This made Tschirm , next to Deutschendorf , one of the most important starting points in the High Tatras .

After the establishment of the Hungarian Carpathian Union (UKV) in 1873, tourism in the High Tatras increased rapidly. In the area of the Tschirmer See, which developed into a climatic health resort, a large number of hotels and guest houses were built and therefore it was decided to build a 4749 m long cog railway between Tschirm and Tschirmer See , which overcame a height difference of 454 m. Operation between Tschirm and Tschirmer See was ensured by means of two train sets, each consisting of a locomotive and two cars. The steam locomotives were manufactured in 1896 by the locomotive factory in Vienna-Floridsdorf . During the 30-minute ascent, the wagons were always pushed.

The area around Lake Tschirmer was completely opened up for tourism.

Train traffic

Tourist traffic

With the exception of a few motorail trains and a few RegioJets , all passenger trains on the Košice – Žilina line stop at the station. The cog railway to Štrbské Pleso begins here .

Freight transport

There is a lot of freight traffic, especially with coal trains to Košice. Trains from the direction of Poprad-Tatry have to stop at the station to uncouple the sliding locomotive.

Railway systems

The station has a reception building, with the upper floor serving as the terminus for the cog railway to Štrbské Pleso . In the basement there are ticket offices and waiting rooms. The station has a house platform and four other platforms that can only be entered after the train has entered. The switches and light signals are operated by two signal boxes.
