history
The station was opened on December 8, 1871 with the completion of the Žilina – Poprad section of the then Kaschau-Oderberger Railway (Ks.Od.) and only four days later with the commissioning of the section to Spišská Nová Ves to the through station. With the commissioning of the first part of the Popradtalbahn in 1889, the station became a railway junction.
The narrow-gauge connection into the High Tatras was created on December 20, 1908 with the Poprad– Starý Smokovec line . The current shape of the tower station was created after a renovation in the 1980s. The modernization and continuation of the renovation in the 1980s, which cost SKK 858 million , was carried out in 2006–2007.
The railway infrastructure of the station is now owned by the Železnice Slovenskej republiky (ŽSR). The trains are operated by Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko (ZSSK).
