Štrbské Pleso (German Tschirmer See , Hungarian Csorbató ) is a winter sports and health resort in the High Tatras in Slovakia . The settlement, founded in 1872 as the hunting lodge of the landowner Jozef Szentivány on the southern bank of Lake Chirmer, belonged to the town of Vysoké Tatry from 1999 to 2007 and, based on a court decision, to the municipality of Štrba in Okres Poprad ( Prešovský kraj ) since May 3, 2007 . Štrbské Pleso is located directly on the mountain lake of the same name, Štrbské pleso .

The first tourist hostels and hotels were built on the shores of the lake in 1875, and a year later a driveway was built from the valley, which was converted into a road in 1921. In 1885 a connection to Starý Smokovec was expanded and the town of Štrbské Pleso was awarded the rating of medicinal baths. In 1906 the Hviezdoslav and Kriváň hotels were built. With the 4.75-kilometer-long cog railway from Štrba ( meter gauge , steam locomotives , Riggenbach system , maximum gradient 15%), the place received a rail connection from 1896 to 1932, then the old Zubačka (Slovak: ozubnicová železničná trať ) was replaced by a bus connection. The narrow-gauge Tatrabahn Electric Railway from Poprad via Starý Smokovec had already started operating in 1911. After the Second World War, some of the hotels were in sanatoria for asthma rebuilt -Kranke, but these were later replaced by tourist facilities. In 1976 a modern Kurhaus Helios was built.

The place was expanded on the occasion of the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1970 . New hotels, a cable car and two ski jumps were built. In the years that followed, the region was expanded into a skiing center with numerous lifts. The new, electric Štrba – Štrbské Pleso cog railway ( system von Roll , meter gauge) was built on the largely preserved route of the rack railway, which was dismantled in 1936 .

At 1346  m nm , Štrbské Pleso is one of the highest spa towns in Central Europe . Above all, respiratory diseases are treated.

The lake was nominated as one of the four natural wonders in Slovakia.

After the World Cup 1970 Štrbské Pleso was in 1990 , 2000 and 2009 hosted the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships and 1999 and 2015 of the Winter Universiade .
