Gerlachov (until 1927 Slovak "Gerlachov"; German Gerlsdorf , Hungarian Gerlahfalva - until 1902 Gerlachfalu ) is a small community in northeastern Slovakia with 852 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to Okres Poprad , a part of Prešovský kraj .

geography

Gerlachov

The village is located in the Podtatranská kotlina basin , more precisely in the lower part of Popradská kotlina , at the foot of the High Tatras . It belongs to the region Zips and gives the mountain northern Gerlachovský štít ( Gerlsdorfer tip ) and indirectly the mountains Gerlachovská veža and Zadný Gerlach name. The center is eight kilometers west of Poprad .

history

The place was founded by Carpathian German gold miners (therefore two crossed mining hammers in the coat of arms), more precisely by the judge Gerlach from Georgenberg / Spišská Sobota (today part of Poprad) on behalf of the aristocratic Máriassy family and is mentioned for the first time in 1326 as Gerlachfewlde (Gerlachfelde). The oldest building in the village, the tower of a church built in the 13th century, also dates from this period. The rest of the church burned down like the entire place in 1876 and was rebuilt. The Protestant church in the village was built in 1800 and restored in 1899.

Like many other places in the Spiš , the German population of Gerlsdorf became part of the Slovak ethnic group over time. This process was largely complete by the end of the 18th century.

Today the place lives mainly from tourism.
