The Poprad-Tatry Airport ( Slovak Medzinárodné letisko Poprad-Tatry , english Poprad-Tatry International Airport ) is an international airport about 5 km west of the center of Poprad and is located about 15 km south of the High Tatras . At 718  m nm , Poprad-Tatry is the highest airport in Central Europe .

history

In 1938 a military airfield was built west of Veľká (today a district of Poprad). Civil flight operations began in 1943 with the Bratislava-Sliac-Poprad-Prešov route. There were no paved runways until 1970. A concrete runway and new office buildings were only completed before the Nordic World Ski Championships in Štrbské Pleso .

In the period from 1970 to 1990, an average of 70,000 passengers were handled annually, with 1976 being the frontrunner with 156,000 people.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Czechoslovak Airlines and Interflug flew from here to Bratislava, Prague and Berlin on schedule throughout the year. In summer also to Burgas, in winter to Dresden, Leipzig and Helsinki. Other airlines also came to Poprad, such as Dan-Air, Condor, Malev and Britannia.

After the Velvet Revolution in 1989, the number of passengers dropped to 10-15,000 people per year for political and economic reasons. In 1996 commercial air traffic was discontinued for the time being. At the beginning of 2000 the commercial air traffic was resumed seasonally by Aeromost. In the meantime, scheduled flights to Prague have been operated by Czech Airlines .
