The Spišský Štiavnik Monastery (Sancta Maria de Scepusio; Spiš, Szepes, Schawnik, Schebnik, in Hungarian Savnik) consecrated to Our Lady is the only medieval Cistercian abbey in today's Slovakia . The site is located in the municipality Spišský Štiavnik in Poprad District which to Prešovský kraj heard in the region Spiš ( Zips ), about 10 km south-east of Poprad , on the upper reaches of the river Hornád .

history

The monastery was founded in 1223 by Koloman, the son of King Andrew II and brother of King Béla IV of Hungary , as the daughter of Wąchock Monastery from the filiation of the Morimond Primary Abbey . The monastery may have suffered in the Hussite Wars of the 15th century and is said to have been closed in 1530 or 1542. A renaissance castle from the 16th / 17th centuries stands on the site of the monastery. Century.
