Walter Werginz

Walter Werginz (born February 18, 1913 ; † unknown) was an Austrian football player . The striker won the silver medal with the Austrian amateur selection at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin .

Career

Walter Werginz played at Klagenfurt AC in the Carinthian regional league. At that time, the league was aimed at amateur players and was not connected to the professional Austrian championship, which at that time was limited to the Vienna area. With the Klagenfurt, the striker was mostly in the shadow of local rivals SK Austria Klagenfurt . In 1936, coach Jimmy Hogan took him to the Olympic Games in Berlin as the only representative of Carinthia, although he had not yet played a game for the Austrian amateur national team. Walter Werginz was used in all four Austrian games in Berlin, also scored in the quarter-finals against Peru and in the semi-finals against Poland. In the Olympic final, however, he lost to the Italian team 2-1 after extra time. After the tournament, Werginz moved to the Styrian first division club WSV Donawitz . In the spring of 1940 he moved to Salzburg for the SAK 1914 and then worked for the FG Salzburg , which had become necessary due to the war .

Werginz has been missing since March 22, 1944 near Suchowola, southeast of Brody in Russia.
