geography
The community is located at the northern end of the Podtatranská kotlina basin , more precisely in the lower part of Popradská kotlina , between the Spiš Magura north and the Bela Tatras west. history
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1289 as Birburn and was founded by German settlers in the middle of the 13th century. Important landlords came from the Bierzeviczy , Wakrotsch , Lasky and Horváth-Stanczits families . In 1828 there are 69 houses and 496 inhabitants who were mainly employed in agriculture.
The place in Zips County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then came to Czechoslovakia, or now Slovakia. After the expulsion of the German population in 1945, Slovaks from the Zipser Magura and Lendak came to repopulate the village.
The name is said to derive from a mineral spring whose water tasted “excellent” (Slovak adjective výborný ). The German name Bierbrunn was translated into Hungarian as Sörkút with the same meaning.
