Veľká Franková (German Großfrankenau or Großfrankowa , Hungarian Nagyfrankvágása - until 1892 Nagyfrankova ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia with 330 inhabitants (December 31, 2019). It belongs to the Okres Kežmarok , part of the Prešovský kraj and is counted as part of the traditional Spiš landscape .

The municipality is located in the Spis Magura in the valley of the Frankovský potok brook in the catchment area of ​​the Dunajec and directly on the Polish border. The center of the village is located at an altitude of 664  m nm and is eleven kilometers from Spišská Stará Ves and 35 kilometers from Kežmarok .

Neighboring municipalities are Łapsze Niżne ( Kacwin , PL) in the north, Matiašovce in the northeast, Spišské Hanušovce in the east, Jezersko in the southeast, Malá Franková in the south and Osturňa in the west.

history

Veľká Franková was first mentioned in writing in 1296 as Frankfalva and was founded by Frank Berzeviczy , a high-ranking member of the Berzeviczy family. In 1396 the village was given to the Carthusian monastery on Refuge Rocks (in today's Slovak Paradise ), and some time later to the monastery in today's village of Červený Kláštor ; the latter was the owner until the 18th century. In 1787 there were 69 houses and 469 inhabitants and in 1828 77 houses and 565 inhabitants, who were mainly employed in agriculture. Other residents worked as shepherds and lumberjacks.

Until 1918 the place in Zips County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

From 1979 to 1990 Veľká Franková was merged with Malá Franková to form the unitary community Franková.

According to the 2011 census, Veľká Franková had 351 residents, including 347 Slovaks, two Ukrainians and one each Pole and Czech. 314 residents belonged to the Roman Catholic Church and three residents to the Greek Catholic Church. Six residents had no denomination and 28 residents had no denomination.
