Toporec (German Topportz or Topertz , Hungarian Toporc ) is a municipality in eastern Slovakia .

It is located in Podtatranská kotlina at the foot of the Spis Magura on the Toporec brook , 4 km from Podolínec and 17 km from Kežmarok .
history
The place was first mentioned in 1256. In 1297 there were two places with the name Toporec: the "Old Toporec" ( Antiqua Toprich ) and the "New Toporec" ( Noua Toprich ); the older village was located at the present-day settlement of Pustovec (about 4 km to the northwest). In the course of time the two villages were united.
Artúr Görgey (1818–1916), Hungarian general during the revolution of 1848/49 , was born here.
