Podolínec (German Pudlein , Hungarian Podolin , Polish Podoliniec , Latin Podolinum ) is a city in northeastern Slovakia with 3,155 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is the second town in Okres Stará Ľubovňa and is located in the valley of the Poprad River .
history
Podolínec was on the northern border of the former Kingdom of Hungary in the former Spiš County ( Spiš in Slovak ) and was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1235. In 1292 it was granted some privileges, such as the right to camp and the right to miles. These rights enabled the city to control part of the trade between Hungary and Poland . Podolínec got fortifications, which are still preserved in several places, and became the strategic center of the area with a town character. In 1412 it became a free royal city .
