Šarišské Jastrabie (Slovak 1927-1948 "Jastrabie" - until 1927 "Jastreb"; Hungarian Felsőkánya - until 1907 Jesztreb ) is a municipality in northeastern Slovakia with 1483 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to Okres Stará Ľubovňa , a part des Prešovský kraj , and is part of the traditional Šariš landscape .

The village is located in the valley of the Vesné brook on the western edge of the Čergov Mountains and belongs to the Poprad catchment area . The "local mountain" is the Minčol ( 1157  m nm ), located almost exactly to the east of the village and the Polish border runs a few kilometers to the north. The center of the village lies at an altitude of 590  m nm and is 24 kilometers from Stará Ľubovňa and 45 kilometers from Prešov .

Neighboring municipalities are Čirč in the north, Lukov and Livovská Huta in the east, Kyjov in the south, Pusté Pole and Krivany in the southwest and Ľubotín in the west and northwest.

history

Šarišské Jastrabie was first mentioned in writing in 1435 as Jeztreb and at that time it belonged to the manor of the Kamenica Castle . The place name is derived from the Slovak word jastrab (German Habicht ). In the 16th century the village became the property of the Desewffy family , followed by Szirmay in the 19th century.

In 1787 there were 81 houses and 548 inhabitants and in 1828 112 houses and 828 inhabitants. The village was and is characterized by agriculture, other sources of income included forestry and animal husbandry.

The place in Sáros County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Šarišské Jastrabie had 1284 inhabitants, of whom 663 were Slovaks, 359 Roma, 149 Russians and two Czechs. 111 residents did not provide any information. 1122 residents supported the Greek Catholic Church, 49 residents joined the Roman Catholic Church and 12 residents joined the Orthodox Church. Five residents were without a denomination and the denomination of 96 residents has not been determined.
