Jarabina (until 1927 Slovak "Jarembina"; Ukrainian / Russian Орябина ( Oriabina ); German rarely Girm , Hungarian Berkenyéd - until 1907 Jarembina , Polish Jarzembina ) is a community in Okres Stará Ľubovňa in northeastern Slovakia . The nearest town is Stará Ľubovňa (5 km).
Jarabina belongs to the Prešovský kraj and had 881 inhabitants in 2011.
The first written mention comes from 1329 as Gyerimp . The place was founded in the Middle Ages by German colonists. Later, the Wallachians and Ruthenians also settled in the village and the Germans were slowly assimilated. In 1910, of the 1,155 inhabitants, only eight were Germans, while 1,030 were Ruthenians. The rest was split between Slovaks, Poles and Hungarians.
In addition to the Russians (41.88%), Slovaks (38.1%), Ukrainians (8.3%) and Roma (7.4%) also live in the municipality (2011 census).
