The parabola ( Russian Парабе́ль ) is a 308 kilometer long left tributary of the Ob in the West Siberian lowlands in Russia .

course

The parable arises in the village of Ust-Tschusik at a height of 62  m from the source rivers Tschusik from the left and Kjonga from the right, which have their origins in the marshes of the Wassjuganje in the southern central part of the West Siberian lowlands. The name of the river has nothing to do with the word parable, derived from ancient Greek ; this is also represented in Russian as parabola .

The parable flows through the flat taiga left of if, on the territory of the Rajons parable of Tomsk Oblast , strong meandering initially in a northerly direction and then gradually turns to the northeast to east. When it reaches the Ob floodplain, the river divides into two arms. After a good 8 km, the right arm joins the Ob at the village of Parabel, named after the river ; Depending on the water level, the water of the Ob can also flow through this arm in the opposite direction to the parabola. The left arm flows for another 50 km as the crow flies in a north-westerly direction roughly parallel and 10 to 20 km away from the Ob, before finally - already on the territory of the Kargassok district - it divides again into two arms, which a little later on the edge of the village Kargassok and 7 km above flow into the Ob at an altitude of 46  m .

The most important of the multitude of smaller tributaries of the parabola are Karsa and Sochiga (Seltschiga) from the right and Omelitsch (Jemeldscha), Tscharus, Verkhnyaya Senkina (Upper Senkina), Nizhnyaya Senkina (Lower Senkina), Tissat and Ponigadka from the left, with the latter in the Underflow of the left arm of the mouth of the parabola opens.

Hydrography

The catchment area of the parabola covers 25,500 km². In the lower reaches the river reaches a width of over 100 m at a depth of 2.5 m; the flow velocity is 0.5 m / s.

The river freezes between the second half of October to the first half of November and the end of April to May, followed by flooding that lasts until August. The water flow of the parabola 153 km above the mouth is an annual average of 87.6 m³ / s with a minimum of 25.8 m³ / s in March and a maximum of 316 m³ / s in May.

Infrastructure

The river is navigable along its entire length; However, only 225 km are considered to be inland waterways, as shipping traffic is routed over the short right-hand estuary near the village of Parabel, while the lower reaches or left-hand estuary are not used regularly. The source rivers of the Parabel are also navigable (Tschusik 210 km, Kjonga 122 km).

The area through which it flows is relatively densely populated on a Siberian scale. Alongside Parabel and Kargassok, the rural settlements Stariza and Nelmatsch with a number of districts are located on the river. Most of these can also be reached by land. In October 2000 a 225-meter-long road bridge was opened over the parabola above the village of the same name, which connects the Kargassok Rajon to the Russian road network.
