Beatrice Colomina

Beatriz Colomina (* 1952 in Madrid , Spain ) is an internationally renowned architecture theorist , media scientist and professor .

life and work

Beatriz Colomina studied at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona (ETSAB) , where she later also taught. After teaching at MIT in 1982, she was appointed to Columbia University in New York City . In 1988 she moved to the School of Architecture, Princeton , where she became director of graduate studies . She is the founder of the interdisciplinary course Media and Modernity at Princeton University. Colomina is the daughter of an architect, she lives in New York and has a daughter.

Colomina worked on the editorial staff of the architecture magazine Daidalos and the academic magazine Gray Room .

As a curator , Colomina and a group of doctoral students developed the exhibition Clip / Stamp / Fold: The Radical Architecture of Little Magazines 196X - 197X . This project was shown at Documenta 12 in 2007 .

Colomina has received numerous awards. These include scholarships from the Fondation Le Corbusier and the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (CASVA) and the Andrew W. Mellon Senior Fellowship. Colomina is currently working on a project called X-Ray Architecture: Illness as a Metaphor for which she received a research grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts .

She has published on the subjects of architecture , mass media, print media, photography , advertising , film and television . She is the author of numerous professional articles and has given lectures around the world. She received the AIA International Architecture Book Award for the publications Privacy and Publicity (1994) and Sexuality and Space (1992).

Colomina was a juror at Akademie Schloss Solitude from 2009 to 2011 . She is one of the scholarship holders of the American Academy in Berlin in the winter semester 2014.
