Daidalos was a journal for architectural theory that appeared quarterly from 1981 to 2000.

history

Daidalos was founded in 1981 by Ulrich Conrads , Norbert Miller , Werner Oechslin , Bernhard Schneider and Anna Teut . The namesake was the original architect, designer and inventor Daidalos , who according to mythical tradition built the Cretan labyrinth.

The magazine was published by Bertelsmann Fachzeitschriften GmbH (Gütersloh), and from 1998 by the Gordon + Breach Publishing Group (G + B). Before the change of publisher, the subtitle had already been changed, from originally Daidalos - Berlin Architectural Journal to Daidalos - Architektur Kunst Kultur . Ulrich Conrads was editor-in-chief as co-editor until 1992, followed by Gerrit Confurius in this function from 1992 to 2000 . With the 75th issue in 2000, the magazine was discontinued.

Daidalos was the only bilingual architecture magazine (English / German) in the German-speaking area. With her thematically independent booklets on art and cultural-historical topics, on the “cultural and anthropological foundations” of building, with “historical and poetic investigations into cross-border perceptions and representational functions of architecture”, Daidalos was , it was said, “more of an encyclopedic book series than one mere magazine.
