Ulrich Conrads

Ulrich Conrads (born October 27, 1923 in Bielefeld ; † September 28, 2013 in Berlin ) was one of the most important German architecture critics , urban planning critics and publicists of the second half of the 20th century.

Life

Conrads spent his school days in Wuppertal and Solingen , after graduating from high school in the spring of 1942, he spent the period up to May 1945 “at war” . He was wounded several times. From 1946 to 1951 Conrads studied art history, archeology, comparative literature, philosophy, sociology and theater studies in Marburg . In 1951 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on demons and drolleries on French church buildings of the 12th century. From 1950 to 1952 he was Leopold Zahn's assistant editor for the monthly magazine Das Arbeiter . From 1952 to 1954 he was editor of the monthly magazine baukunst und werkform , which he managed from 1954 to 1957. Conrads became known to a wider audience through the series Neues Bauen - in our time , which was broadcast by RIAS Berlin from 1960 to 1972 . Recordings of the around 800 broadcasts are in the Ulrich Conrads archive of the BTU Cottbus .

For more than three decades, from July 1957 to the end of 1988, Conrads was editor-in-chief of Bauwelt, which is published weekly in Berlin . In 1964, together with Gerd Albers , Kurt Eggeling, Klaus-Jakob Thiele and Klaus Winter, he founded the Stadtbauwelt as a quarterly publication of the Bauwelt, whose target group are architects, town planners and town planners, and of which he was also editor-in-chief until 1988. In 1963 Conrads founded the Bauwelt Fundamente book series , the most extensive German-language book series on the theory of architecture and urban development with 150 titles. In 1981 he founded the bilingual (German and English) Daidalos - Berlin Architectural Journal with Norbert Miller , Werner Oechslin , Bernhard Schneider and Anna Teut , and was its publisher and editor-in-chief until 1992.

The German Urban Development Award was initiated in 1980 by Ulrich Conrads, together with the Bank für Gemeinwirtschaft , and named after their long-term chairman of the board, Walter Hesselbach . Since 2006, the prize has been awarded by the Wüstenrot Foundation in cooperation with the German Academy for Urban Development and Regional Planning e. V. continued.

Since 1981 Conrads was a member of the architecture section of the Free Academy of the Arts in Hamburg .

A large part of his legacy (texts, films, documents and recordings of his radio broadcasts) has been in the Ulrich Conrads archive of the Information, Communication and Media Center ( IKMZ ) of the BTU Cottbus since 2005 . He handed over his private library to the university library of the Bauhaus University Weimar .

Ulrich Conrads died on September 28, 2013, shortly before his 90th birthday, in Berlin .
