Bauwelt foundations

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bauwelt Fundamente is a series of paperback books on the theory of architecture and urban planning founded by Ulrich Conrads in 1963 and published together with Peter Neitzke since the early 1980s. Many basic texts on the architecture of modernism and later postmodernism appeared in it . With 150 volumes meanwhile, it is the most extensive German-language book series on these topics (the Handbuch der Architektur published from 1880 to 1943 comprises 143 titles). The series was edited by Peter Neitzke (1938–2015) until his death .

history

The name of the book series is derived from the architecture magazine Bauwelt , of which Conrads was editor-in-chief. The series was first published by Ullstein Verlag in Berlin , the volumes from this period have the title "Ullstein Bauwelt Fundamente" in some bibliographies. The volumes did not always appear in the order in which they were numbered, nor did all the numbers appear. Well-known personalities such as Gerd Albers , Adolf Arndt , Lucius Burckhardt , Werner Hebebrand , Werner Kallmorgen , Hermann Mattern , Julius Posener , Hans Scharoun and Hans Joachim Schneider contributed to the publication of the early volumes . Characteristic for the design of the volumes is the 14.0 × 19.0 cm format, the black and white cover, simple adhesive binding and, for the early editions, the blue-colored book cut .

The book series was later published by Vieweg Verlag in Braunschweig. An advertising slogan from this time is: Bauwelt Fundamente - documents on architecture and urban development - building blocks for the city of tomorrow. A few years later, the series was published by Bauverlag BV GmbH, Gütersloh, (in collaboration with the Basler Birkhäuser Verlag ). Contributors to the publication are Gerd Albers , Hildegard Barz-Malfatti, Elisabeth Blum, Werner Durth , Eduard Führ, Werner Sewing , Thomas Sieverts , Jörn Walter . At the end of 2009, the architecture and design division was sold to the Spanish architecture publisher Actar (Barcelona) and the new ActarBirkhäuser group was founded. ActarBirkhäuser ran the Birkhäuser imprint . Bankruptcy proceedings were opened against the latter on March 6, 2012. The series has been published by De Gruyter , which has taken over Birkhäuser as imprint , since 2012 .
