Adrian von Buttlar

Adrian von Buttlar (born September 12, 1948 in Marburg ) is a German art historian .

Life

Adrian von Buttlar studied art history, archeology and sociology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and at the Courtauld Institute of Art at the University of London from 1968 to 1976 . He received his doctorate in 1977 with a thesis on the English country estate in the 18th century , the habilitation took place in 1984 on Leo von Klenze's architecture in the field of tension between classicism and historicism. After working at the universities in Munich, Trier and Augsburg, he was professor for art history at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel from 1995 to 2001 and held the chair for modern art history at the Technical University of Berlin from 2001 to 2013 . From 2005 to 2012 he was dean of Faculty I - Humanities and visiting professorships in Taipei / Taiwan (2009) and St. Petersburg (2016).

Between 1996 and 2009 von Buttlar was chairman of the Berlin State Monument Council , 2001-2008 he was chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg , 2008-2013 he was chairman of the board of trustees of the Central Institute for Art History in Munich. Since 2011 he has been a scientific adviser to the monument program of the Wüstenrot Foundation Ludwigsburg. Buttlar researches and publishes mainly on the history of garden art and the architectural history of the modern age ( classicism , historicism and modernity ) as well as on theory, politics and history of monument preservation . In an open letter to Archbishop Heiner Koch he spoke out against the redesign of the St. Hedwig's Cathedral in Berlin and advocated the preservation of the church interior designed by Hans Schwippert with Anton Wendling (window).
