Lucius Burckhardt

Lucius Burckhardt (born March 12, 1925 in Davos ; † August 26, 2003 in Basel ) was a Swiss sociologist and economist . He is considered the founder of promenadology .

Life

Lucius Burckhardt first studied medicine, then economics and sociology in Basel , where he received his doctorate in 1955. phil. and then worked as a research assistant at the social research center at the University of Münster in Dortmund . After a guest professorship at the Ulm School of Design in 1959, he took on several teaching positions from 1961 to 1973 and later as a guest professor for sociology at the architecture department of the ETH Zurich . In addition, he was editor-in-chief of the magazine Werk from 1962 to 1972 .

1976 took Lucius Burckhardt with students from the University of Kassel his first " Urspaziergang " in Castle Park Riede near Kassel , and he in the 1980s with his wife on the basis of his previous research on sociology and urbanism the promenadology developed. From 1976 to 1983 Lucius Burckhardt was first chairman of the Deutscher Werkbund , from 1973 he taught as a professor for the socio-economics of urban systems in the department of architecture, urban and landscape planning at the university in Kassel. He was a corresponding member of the German Academy for Urban Development and Regional Planning , Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres , member of the founding advisory board of the Saar College of Fine Arts from 1987 to 1989 and founding dean of the design faculty of the Bauhaus University Weimar from 1992 to 1994 .

His work was recognized in 1994 with the Hessian Culture Prize for outstanding achievements in the fields of science, ecology and aesthetics , the Federal Prize for Supporters of Design in 1995 and the Swiss Design Prize in 2001.

His wife Annemarie Burckhardt , née Wackernagel (1930–2012), whom he married in 1955, was an artist and at the same time his most important colleague.
